A Court of Thorn and Roses by Sarah J Mass

No me gusta.

I heard so much about this book, this series, that I might have built it up too much in my head. But my 14 year old daughter wanted to read it and my SIL thought it might be OK but suggested I read it before her just in case. Well, my daughter finished it about a week before me. I’m usually a much faster reader. Why not for this book? Because Feyre worked my last good nerve!

Feyre lives in the human world and is barely scratching an existence for her 2 older sisters and dad. They used to be rich but lost their wealth by poor decision making by their father. Their mother has long died but the older sisters remember her well. They also remember their wealth and are bitter towards their father for the new existence. Feyre is expected to hunt and feed them all and she feels the pressure. While out in the woods, she sees a deer. There is also the biggest wolf tracking it as well. She kills both and expects to be well fed for at least 2 weeks. What comes next is unexpected and Feyre is sent to live with the Fairies who, she was always taught, hate humans as much as humans hate them. Might have something to do with the Fairies enslaving the humans for many centuries.

Tamlin is the Fae that “traps” Feyre in his land with a negotiation that she has to stay with him “for reasons” and that her family will only suffer should she return. She is understandably untrusting, but learns to at least appreciate not having to struggle every day.

Tamlin is a High Fae and is the head of his Court who is dealing with a blight that is sending strange and dangerous things to his land, attacking his people, stripping them off their powers with no immediate end in sight. He has an emissary/friend in Lucien but they are both dealing with this problem. It’s not until later that we learn how Feyre could be the most important key.

All this sounds great and intriguing but this is where Feyre annoyed me. Girl, you are HUMAN in a land of people with powers. Why are you acting like you know everything?

I’m not sure I’ll read the next books. I’ve got too on my TBR that I want to read to bother with ones I’m “meh” on.

3 out of 5 stars/Recommend(?)
