The Kiss Countdown by Etta Easton

I haven’t read a book about an astronaut yet. Add on that the main characters are black, I enjoyed all of the side characters and this was a new to me author? I was already primed to enjoy Vincent and Amerie’s story!

Amerie is having a rough go at the moment. Her mom has sickle cell and has been sick, off and on, for years and her parents have collected a lot of medical bills. Amerie recently lost her job and is unsuccessfully trying to get back into the event planning space. Add in that rent is increasing and she hasn’t gotten a new job since she was fired, things are looking pretty bleak. When she bumps into an incredibly handsome man in the coffee shop who seems a little too full of himself, she’s realizing that luck is no longer her friend.

Vincent is an astronaut and has always been interested in space. He spends his free time rock climbing and doing other extreme sports. What he didn’t expect was to bump into the incredibly beautiful woman who ran into him in the coffee shop again and to have her use him as a boyfriend so that she would not feel like a loser in front her ex. But it works out in both of their favors as she needs to keep the lie going and he needs a fake girlfriend to get his sisters and mom off of his back about settling down.

They strike an unlikely friendship. Granted it’s based off of nonsense and shenanigans, but to really sell this relationship to his family, they need to try and be friends and get to know each other. That turns into her moving into his house, which solves her rent increase problem, and also helps them get more familiar with each other prior to celebrating his mom’s birthday, which he has been dreading.

It’s a romance book so there is going to be a bit of drama. There’s also going to be some unnecessary misunderstandings. But, in truth, what you have are two people who want to find love but are wary about giving their full trust to someone else. Unfortunately, that’s where a lot of the misunderstanding comes between Vincent and Amerie. I do think this book would have benefitted from hearing Vincent’s perspective.
