Ok. I’m still not sure if I liked this book or not. To say there’s a lot going on is an understatement! We’ve got a high school in the worst neighborhood, teachers that don’t care, administrators giving BJs to other adults in their office 😳, school security that looks the other way and regular fights in the hallway.
•
We meet Kyla in the prologue and we learn that’s she’s a trained fighter that’s pretending not to be “for reasons”. She’s trying to get on the radar of the neighborhood gang called The Crew in the Heights neighborhood and the fastest way to get noticed is to win an underground fight where she’s very much the underdog.
•
However, before she gets there (within 2 days of moving into the neighborhood) she has to try and blend in at the sorry excuse for a high school. In quick succession we meet Oscar (star football quarterback and very connected with the Crew), Brawler (fighter with the Crew but not a member) and Rocket (son of Big Daddy K- leader of the Crew). We know that Kyla has a vendetta against Big Daddy K and will stop at nothing to take him out.
•
Where the frustration comes in is that, apparently, she is irresistible to everyone that meets her. Brawler wants to keep her safe and keeps trying to find ways to help her get out. Oscar also seems to wonder why she’s there because it’s obvious that she “doesn’t belong” and can’t imagine anyone caring for him. Rocket just likes that she can fight, that he can’t immediately have her but claims her as his own as soon as she wins the fight.
•
Again, Brawler falls for her in about 3 days, Oscar a little over a week and Rocket immediately upon seeing her. And, to add more to the shenanigans, she has “feelings” for all of them in some way or fashion. Thankfully, because the majority of the people are high schoolers, there are very few intimate scenes which normally I would hate but were appropriate for this book.
•
I will end up reading book 2 because book 1 ended on a cliffhanger. I’m REALLY hoping that book 2 ends the story because I don’t know if I can a handle reading more about her wishy-washy feelings.

3 out of 5/Cautiously recommend
